Virginia Supreme Court Issues Guidelines
on Payment for Court-Appointed, Capital Defense Lawyers
June 29, 2001 - On June 29, 2001, the Virginia Supreme Court for
the first time issued guidelines for compensation paid to lawyers
representing indigent defendants in capital cases. The guidelines
call for lawyers to be paid $125 an hour for in-court work and $75
an hour for out-of-court work, with no cap. Individual trial judges
will retain the discretion to set compensation rates. In Virginia,
all costs of legal representation for indigent defendants are paid
by the state. (Further details to be published in the next issue
of The Spangenberg Report).
